ART AS HEALING

The heart of our organization is art. Yaya always had a pencil, a paintbrush, or a tattoo tool in her hand. Art was her therapy, her healthy escape, and her way of expressing herself when she did not know how to say what she was feeling. The importance of her art was not only about how successful she was becoming, but also about how it helped her through some of her hardest moments. We honor Yaya’s legacy through her art and share the healing that art gave her.

We now run three Art as Healing programs. These programs are developed in collaboration with local artists to bring a unique, fun, and healing experience to people in recovery, their families, and people navigating substance use challenges.

Art as Healing Recovery Edition

Yaya Por Vida supports nonprofit inpatient and outpatient treatment centers, especially those with limited access to recovery tools, skills, and programs. Our Art as Healing Recovery Edition helps improve mental health, mood, motivation, and communication through a variety of artistic mediums.

Participants are guided by one of our local volunteer artists during a two-hour session held once a month. Each session introduces new art skills and focuses on themes that help participants explore and express their feelings throughout their recovery.

Art as Healing Street Edition

aya Por Vida holds a monthly outreach for people experiencing housing insecurity in Overtown and Downtown Miami. During this outreach, we provide food, Infectious Disease Prevention and Education care kits, community resources, Narcan, and overdose prevention education. We also offer Art as Healing sessions.

People experiencing housing insecurity rarely have access to healing programs created to meet them where they are. Substance use disorder and other mental health challenges can make it difficult to find and maintain stable housing.

By building trusting relationships, we learned that providing more than food and care kits can help support the next step in recovery. Our Street Edition program is a little different. We use quick art techniques inspired by street art. Because many participants are often on the move, we give them a safe space to slow down, breathe, rest, and create a small tag or drawing that helps them reflect and recharge.

These sessions have led to more open conversations about participants’ challenges, improved moods, and greater curiosity about moving forward in recovery. Art as Healing Street Edition also gives our volunteers an opportunity to connect more closely with participants while creating their own healing art.

Art as Healing Skool Edition

Peer-Led Program for Youth Impacted by the War on Drugs

Our Art as Healing Skool Edition is a powerful program created to support middle and high school students who have been affected by the drug war. Through peer-led art sessions, trauma-informed care, and peer support, this program gives young people a safe and caring space to process their experiences, develop healthy coping skills, and grow stronger.

Art and music therapies are now used alongside other mental health treatments. These therapies can help people achieve better outcomes by giving them additional ways to express themselves, process their experiences, and heal.
